It's just as important to be informed and creative when dining at home. Here are some practical suggestions offered by the American Holistic Medical Association:
1: In general, decrease the amount of beef and pork you eat. Serve beef in smaller portions (small portions in casseroles, smaller steaks, etc.). Avoid roasts and other large cuts of meat. Always use the leanest meat available. When a recipe calls for hamburger, always pre-cook it and drain off the fat before adding it to the dish.
2: As you eat less meat, eat more fish and lean fowl, since these are lower in total fat. Remove as much of the skin and subcutaneous fat as possible before eating fowl.
3: Use the dairy products with the lowest fat content, such as 1% fat cheese and cottage cheese. Use 1% low-fat or skim milk instead of whole milk.
4; Add as little oil, butter, milk or cream as possible to dishes and sauces. Use oil-free salad dressings or cut the fat content by mixing a low-fat dressing with equal parts of low-fat yogurt. Lemons or herbs may be used as an oil-alternative.
5: Limit your intake of ice cream, cakes, pies and pudding since these contain excess fats. We assume that by now you're convinced that cutting down on fat makes sense. But how much you are willing - or able - to cut down depends on your motivation. Scaring people about the health consequences of their action rarely works. All too often, folks justify self-destructive behavior by telling themselves: "I know I should stop smoking, eat a healthier diet, exercise regularly, wear my seat belt - and someday I will. In the meantime, nothing bad is going to happen to me."
