EATING TO YOUR HEART CONTENT: PUT THE DIAPER SET ON DRUGS? DO MISLEADING LIFE-SAVING CLAIMS HELP?
A margarine ad warns wives: "His heart is in your hands," suggesting women play Russian roulette with their mate's life if they don't switch to the advertised 'no cholesterol' product. Not true. What the ads don't tell you is this: margarines are as much as 35% 'trans' (the bad twisted molecules) fatty acids -free radical generators. Europe won't even allow the sales of our margarines because they are so high in trans-fatty acids. The ad-inspired margarine craze is profit-motivated, its benefits unsupported by science, and more harmful than the saturated fats they are designed to replace.
Similarly misleading life-saving claims are routine plugs for non-dairy creamers, whipped toppings, oat bran cereals and muffins, cookies, and crackers, mayonnaise and salad dressings, cooking oils and egg substitutes - the entire array of heavily advertised packaged and processed foods.
Major players race to develop new ways to capitalize on "cholesterolphobia." There's almost no end to the ingenious ways producers find to tinker with foods in the attempt to fatten profits. In the works now is a new technology said to remove as much as 90% of the cholesterol from egg yolks and to give eggs a longer shelf life.
The inventor is very secretive about the process, but is seeking venture capital with the promise that low cholesterol, long-lasting eggs will prove very valuable for food chains, nursing homes and hospitals, and potentially extremely profitable for the investors. Nowhere in the prospectus is there any indication that the new product will be good for consumers.
