EATING TO YOUR HEART CONTENT: DIET OR DIE? THE NEWEST CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING DRUG

The newest cholesterol-lowering drug on the scene is lovastatin (sold as Mevacor). It burst on the scene in November, 1991, with reports claiming it can shrink fatty plaque deposits in coronary arteries, based on a two-year study involving 270 people conducted at the University of Southern California for Merck & Company, the drug's manufacturers.
Following claims that the study 'proved' the drug would reduce risk of heart disease death, the first reaction came from the stock market - it went wild!
How should you react? Our suggestion is you call your broker instead of your physician. Chances are the stock will be more profitable to your bank balance than the drug to your health.
After checking with a number of authoritative sources, this is what we found out about this newest 'miracle' drug:
1: Since press releases failed to report the amount of plaque reduction or the magnitude of blood flow increase, the alleged pharmaceutical triumph is highly suspect.
2: The release reported that plaque reduction was determined by angiography, a totally inaccurate measuring technique.
3: Lovastatin chemically resembles the drug Clofribate which has been found to double the risk of gallbladder disease and cause liver cancer in rats.
4: The "good news" about lovastatin was trumped throughout the land before safety tests have even begun.
5: Reducing cholesterol levels does not deal with the underlying disease. Lowering cholesterol levels over an extended period of time with a toxic drug is apt to prove foolhardy, if not fatal.
